Downtown Security Network (DSN) Coordinator

The Downtown Security Network (DSN) is a Downtown BIZ-led, Winnipeg Police Service-endorsed safety initiative connecting downtown business owners, property owners, and security teams with each other and with the police and BIZ. The DSN allows members to share resources and communicate immediately about safety issues in order to reduce crime and improve downtown safety.

The DSN Coordinator will be responsible for engaging with businesses in the downtown and providing up to date training, tactics and information related to increasing personal and public safety. The eligible candidate must be highly motivated and community oriented.

Under the direction of and reporting to the Director & Supervisor, Safety and Outreach, the DSN Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the Downtown Security Network (DSN) program as well as performing operational and administrative functions of the Safety Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

DSN COORDINATION
-Plan and coordinate DSN Meetings and Workshops – find suitable presenters, liaise with downtown businesses to find suitable locations, send out a formal invitation and record RSVP’s, send out a meeting agenda, arrange for refreshments for the members, set up displays, delegate Watch staff and volunteers to be present and assist (i.e. record attendance) the day of the meeting/workshop
-Deliver presentations in the downtown area; schedule and facilitate presentations to downtown businesses and the general public, providing information on safety programs offered by the BIZ and tips on personal safety
-Manage the CCTV database and communicate with WPS and businesses downtown about the importance of CCTV; Develop and maintain a comprehensive database, potentially in conjunction with other agencies
-Maintain the DSN website – post blogs, e-Alerts, crime stats (BIZ and WPS), ‘positive press’ communication pieces, upcoming meetings and workshops, minutes/PowerPoint presentations from previous meetings
-Provide the Communications Coordinator with relevant Safety Department information to be posted on the Downtown BIZ social media outlets
-Stay informed on current events that may be suitable to post on the DSN website or use them to make our staff more informed as they perform their duties in the public
-Provide administrative functions such as recording and maintaining a valid list of DSN members in the Access database
-Maintain regular contact with BIZ members by organizing visits to local businesses to discuss safety issues.
-Assist with problem solving on behalf of the downtown business community, serving as a link between businesses, Winnipeg Police Service and other agencies
-Gather, organize and analyze Downtown Watch and Winnipeg Police Service crime stats; present to the Director and Supervisor, Safety and Outreach

OPERATIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
-Receive direction and report to the Director, Safety and Outreach; liaise on key safety programs and tasks
-Liaise with other BIZ staff as needed for DSN-related activities
-Build relationships with the general public and business partners with an emphasis on customer service
-Attend all required meetings/host meetings on an as-needed basis

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
-Related Post-Secondary Education including Criminal Justice, Sociology, etc.is considered an asset
-Retail/Customer Service experience
-Knowledge of crime prevention as it pertains to shoplifting, theft from motor vehicles, etc.
-Experience in public speaking and presentation skills
-Relevant training and certifications – Retail Loss Prevention, NVCI, First Aid, etc. is considered an asset
-Ability to network and work closely with a variety of stakeholders
-Goal oriented with strong organizational skills
-Strong computer skills including MSOffice
-Knowledge of CCTV database systems is considered an asset
-Clear Criminal Record check
