 Joanne Hunter has a profession that you don’t hear of too often anymore. She is a milliner-a hat maker- and an entrepreneur. Hunter owns H’Attitude in Portage Place, a store dedicated to hats of all styles, colours and materials. She sells hats fit for any occasion, including weddings, and if she doesn’t have what you are looking for, she will custom make it. The combination of her hat making skills and sharp business mind has made H’Attitude a unique and successful hat store for more than 11 years. Hunter moved her store to Portage Place from Eaton Centre eight years ago and has not looked back since. With close to 1,000 hats in stock, the walls and racks are filled with one-of-a-kind models that are sure to grab anyone’s attention. Hunter also makes her own Harris Tweed hats, an extremely rare wool fabric that is only available from a small area in Scotland. Along with hats, Hunter sells scarves and jewelry made from local artists, custom bridal hairpieces and veils. The hats range in prices, but start around $20. Hunter said people can look forward to seasonal changes in her stock. She carries hats and accessories fit for each season, including toques and hood scarves for the chilly winters. Hunter likes having a downtown location because she gets to meet a lot of tourists and people who are new to Winnipeg. She thinks downtown needs to have more locally owned businesses and boutiques to create a unique shopping destination for people. H’Attitude is open Monday to Saturday 10am until 6pm, except on Thursdays and Fridays when the store remains open until 9pm.
