The Exchange District BIZ
The Exchange District Business Improvement Zone was established by a by-law of the City of Winnipeg in 1989. A Management Board, comprising twelve elected from District businesses and one city council appointee, oversees the operation of the BIZ. Directors are elected to the management board at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in the fall. Its yearly budget and program are first subject to approval by members at the AGM, and then city council.

Every business in the zone is automatically a contributing member of the organization by virtue of its paying a special levy on its business taxes. The role of the BIZ is to bring local businesses together to promote the area, to improve the District’s physical appearance, to support events that attract people to the community, and to play an advocacy role for local business on issues of common concern.

Hilderman Thomas Frank Cram
HTFC is a firm of landscape architects and planners serving Winnipeg for over 40 years. We have created and contributed to a number of iconic downtown places including The Forks National Historic Site and Riverwalk, Oodena Celebration Circle, Millennium Library Park, University of Winnipeg, The Exchange District streetscape, Manitoba Hydro Place, and Esplanade Riel. We view urban design as a matter of relationships: of understanding and anticipating the interactions between places, people, and natural systems. Successful urban open spaces require that a number of competing and sometimes contradictory goals must be brought into balance. Foremost among these goals is the need to stimulate what Jane Jacobs calls “the wealth of public life” – that is, putting people first. Our current projects at Upper Fort Garry and the Variety Heritage Adventure Playground at The Forks exemplify this approach.

Hostelling International
Hostelling International (HI) Manitoba acquired the former Gordon Downtowner Motel in August 2007 to create the HI Winnipeg Downtowner Hostel, located at 330 Kennedy Street. Significant work has been done to revitalize the property, creating a world-class hostel facility. The building has been redesigned to consider factors such as ecological responsibility, local economic vitality, cultural sensitivity, and rich travel experiences, while highlighting the building’s original 1950s architecture. The second floor features dorm and private rooms, each with ensuite bathrooms. The third floor has been renovated and set up for student housing. The main floor features a large common kitchen and comfortable lounge. The hostel’s LO Pub has become the place to be for local pub goers while the onsite restaurant is currently being rebranded as The LO Bistro, offering fresh, organic and tasty options that will be sure to tempt the taste buds of hostel guests and locals alike.

Plans are now underway to convert the warehouse at Princess Street and Bannatyne Avenue into a residential building. The Warehouse building is now being renovated to house at least 60 condominium units. With a budget of $8.5 million on a conversion that will involve the removal of the three freight elevators, construction of two new modern elevators and the creation of condo units that will range in size from 700 to 1,000 square feet. The six-storey warehouse is best known to Winnipeggers as the home of Penthouse Furniture. It was granted Grade 2 heritage status in 1982, partly because of its combination of Romanesque and Chicago-skyscraper design.

Upper Fort Garry Park and Interpretive Centre
The Upper Fort Garry site is one of the most significant historic sites in western Canada. It was the hub of the fur trade beginning in the 1700’s and at one time had a market impact over most of North America. When Upper Fort Garry was built in 1832, it became the administrative and economic centre for Rupert’s Land. Its most historic role was as the home of the Riel provisional government that eventually led to the admission of Manitoba to the Dominion of Canada in 1870. It was the cultural, social, judicial, economic, and military centre of Canada for over 50 years. The Fort was eventually torn down in 1883 and all that is left of the original Fort is the Governor’s Gate which has been preserved on a small piece of heritage property. The Friends of Upper Fort Garry (FUFG) organized as a volunteer, charitable organization with the goal of establishing a major heritage and interpretive complex in Winnipeg on the site of the original Upper Fort Garry. The property was acquired by FUFG in June, 2009. The plan is to construct a heritage park and interpretative centre on the site. The design will complement the existing attractions at The Forks and will complete the historic value of the intersection of the Red River and the Assiniboine River. Demolition of two buildings on the site has already occurred. Archaeological investigations will begin in the spring of 2009 and construction will begin soon after.

YouCUBE
YouCUBE is an experiment in density and affordability at the north end of Waterfront Drive, in downtown Winnipeg. Located on one of the street’s last available plots of land with direct access to the Red River, YouCUBE offers market rate housing in an area that is made up primarily of luxury condo developments. The project challenges conventional multi-family housing design, providing 18 three and four storey townhouses clustered together on an elevated community plaza. Each unit is an open living cube defined by an architectural ‘wrap’; an element that delineates floors, mezzanines, and storage units as it weaves through the space. The wrap reacts with the walls of the cube by folding back onto itself to create a step, or continuing upward to form window openings. Ceiling heights soar up to 36 feet and roof-top terraces allow for panoramic views of the city skyline. The building’s pristine white finish stands in intentional contrast to the neighbourhood’s current industrial setting, one which is changing rapidly as the south end of Waterfront Drive is redefined by high-priced condominiums. youCUBE has the potential to enliven the street with a new residential demographic and small-scale commercial activity, increasing pedestrian traffic and acting as a catalyst for future growth.

YouCube Launch Event – 7pm- June 26
Come to the unveiling of youCube, we will be selling Phase 2 on a first come first serve basis. For more detailed information contact JF Rratthe at jf@jfratthhe.com or #990-8794
