Safety is an issue across the city. When it comes to downtown, many people have an unfair perception of safety that simply does not reflect the reality. Winnipeg Police Service crime statistics since 2001 have shown a downward trend in crimes against people and property in downtown. In fact, you’re more likely to have your car stolen in the suburbs than downtown! That said, there are several programs that help you feel more at ease in the city centre. Downtown Watch ambassadors walk the streets, providing a friendly and reassuring presence. Many downtowners feel safer seeing the ambassadors and knowing someone is watching out for them. Watch members offer directions, tourist info, first aid and assistance wherever needed. Whether your car has stalled, you’d like a SafeWalk, or you’re looking for directions to a great restaurant, the Downtown Watch are there to help. For a SafeWalk, call the Downtown Watch at 958-4627, 7:30am to 11:30pm, Sunday to Monday and 24 hours from Tuesday to Saturday. The BIZ’s Change for the Better program offers an alternative to giving spare change to panhandlers. Donate to six downtown social agencies to give the help you want to give: food, clothing and shelter. Check out more tips on how to deal with panhandlers.
