September 12, 2010

In its second year, this FREE eco-friendly, healthy-lifestyles festival and active transportation initiative will see the north side of Broadway closed from Osborne to Main Street, creating a network of car-free streets from Assiniboine Park all the way to The Forks!

New in 2010!!! Experience a CURB LANE FREE FROM VEHICLES down WOLESELEY, FURBY, WESTMINSTER, YOUNG and BALMORAL streets to ride your bike, walk, run, or skate your way down to Broadway in one fell swoop!

And while you’re boppin’ down Broadway, watch for the new RBC Blue Water Conservation zone, as well as fitness classes, a farmers' market, kids' zone, bike demos, craft market, music and so much more.

BRING YOUR OWN BOTTLE? Yup, water bottle that is! Keep filling up at our water station on Memorial and Broadway and show us how green you can be.

Sign the water pledge wall in the RBC Blue Water Conservation Zone and challenge yourself to use less H20!

Take To the Streets
Winnipeg first Canadian city to stage Ciclovia

Check out photos from the event!

We took to the streets in a big way Winnipeg! On Sunday, September 13 from 8am until 6pm, the entire north side of Broadway was closed to motorized vehicles from Main to Osborne connecting Assiniboine Park to The Forks for Ciclovia.

What's Ciclovia?

Ciclovia, meaning “bike way,” began in Bogotá, Colombia, where every Sunday major roads are blocked off and millions of people fill them running, walking, biking while enjoying free outdoor fitness classes like yoga and aerobics.
Ciclovia events have been held all over the world, but have yet to hit Canadian streets until now. Although talks exist for a Vancouver Ciclovia, Winnipeg was the first!
Numerous organizations are hoping to make this a regular event in Winnipeg, and hosted this pilot project to gauge public interest.

Check out the map!

The event featured a hay maze, a farmers’ market, street vendors, a kids’ zone, buskers, horse drawn wagons, outdoor fitness classes and other non-motorized fun. The band Oh My Darling wraped up the event with a special concert at The Forks’ Oodena Circle (pictured at right) at 4pm. The goal was to promote physical activity, community building and the environmental benefits of using non-motorized forms of transportation.
