CICLOVIA AT A GLANCE

Facts for Ciclovia 2009
- Ran between 8am and 6pm on Sunday, September 13, 2009
- The goal was to promote physical activity, community building and the benefits of using non-motorized transportation through a bikeway and major programming area downtown
- Winnipeg was the first Canadian city to run Ciclovia
- The route connected Assiniboine Park to the Forks with full and partial street closures
- The north side of Broadway from Main to Osborne was closed to motorized traffic and was home to vendors, entertainers, family activities, fitness classes, farmers’ market and more
- An estimated 10,000 people were out on the route that day, cycling, jogging, walking, rollerblading, etc, many of whom don’t usually come downtown
- There was a great age and socio-economic mix visible
- Temperature was close to 25 degrees Celsius
- Over 22 buskers added music to Broadway
- Over 25 groups provided their time and skills on the day with displays, hosting activities, putting on performances, etc
- Close to 50 volunteers made the event possible
- Charity: Coalition to Save the Elms
- Event was put on with a budget of roughly $50,000

Ciclovia Plans for 2010
- Ciclovia 2010 dates are August 22 & 29 and September 5 & 12
- Ciclovia will run from 11am-7pm, with street closures connecting Assiniboine Park to the Forks like last year, but also extending past the Forks to encompass Provencher Blvd
- All dates include street closures and minimal programming
- September 12 will feature extensive programming, vendors and concerts like Ciclovia 2009
- The aim is to have 25,000 people out on the streets over the course of these four days in 2010
- To get some hype going for the event, we plan to sell and gift limited edition Ciclovia 2010 t-shirts
- Event will focus on green living (i.e., no generators, no Styrofoam plates, etc)

Lights on Broadway: an additional event for 2010
- Lights on Broadway will occur in conjunction with Ciclovia and Homecoming 2010, on August 21 & 28 and September 4 & 11, 2010
- Lights on Broadway will run from 4pm-11pm with programming focused on the north side of Broadway between Osborne and Main
- Lights on Broadway is a new downtown festival with a particular focus on lighting the Broadway elm trees and key buildings
- Programming over the four weeks to include family events, a dance party, music, fireworks, wine and food market, artisan market, etc
