Canada’s biggest Lebowski film tribute event returns, man
January 18, 2010 – The Dude is coming back to Winnipeg. Fans of Ethan and Joel Coen’s 1998 cult movie The Big Lebowski will gather downtown at the Garrick Centre, 330 Garry Street, Saturday, March 6, for Lebowskipalooza 2010 – a fundraising event with White Russians, contests and what-have-you – in support of the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
The movie bombed in theatres, but has since become what The Independent has called “the first cult film of the Internet era”. The protagonist, played by Jeff Bridges, is a laid-back, unemployed guy who loves to bowl and calls himself The Dude. He and his bowling partners get wrapped up in a case of mistaken identity involving a stolen Persian rug, a severed toe with nail polish and a trio of nihilists.
Lebowskipalooza 2010 organizers Trent Whidden and Greg Skazyk say when they put on Winnipeg’s first Lebowski festival at the Park Theatre in March 2009, all they ever wanted was to watch their favourite movie on the big screen. “We figured there must be other fans of the movie locally, but we had no idea so many would come out,” says Whidden. “The response was overwhelming. The theatre sold out, and we were turning people away at the door, unfortunately.”
This year, the second annual Lebowskipalooza has been moved to the larger Garrick Centre, with a capacity of up to 600 people. As with similar Lebowski festivals in the United States, in addition to the film screening, fans of the movie, also known as “Achievers”, will be encouraged to dress like their favourite characters and compete for prizes in Lebowski trivia and lobby games. “We’re happy to donate all proceeds from Lebowskipalooza 2010 to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba,” says Skazyk. “We wouldn’t dream of keeping the money! After all, that would be very un-Dude.”
Lebowskipalooza 2010 tickets will be available for $10, in advance at Movie Village, 57 Osborne Street, and at the door, the night of the event. For event details, fans can visit www.lebowskipalooza.com.

“a marvelous play, painfully funny and passionately serious" - sunday times
Sometimes students end up being the best teachers. Frank is a poet and a professor of English literature whose disillusioned outlook on life drives him to the bottle. Rita is a hairdresser from the wrong side of the tracks, hungry to find some meaning to life. But when the cigarette-smoking, gum-chewing and fast-talking Rita shows up in Frank's office and demands an education, he is forced to re-evaluate his cynical attitude in the face of her enthusiasm.
The resulting clash of expectations, assumptions and social class leads to a funny, honest and heartfelt examination of the ups and downs of formal education – and of life.
