The use of active forms of transportation helps to contribute to the vibrancy of the downtown area. The hustle and bustle of walkers, cyclists, roller bladers, transit users and the like helps to bring life to the downtown streets, not to mention the environmental benefits!
Consider some of the following options to make your workplace more walking- and transit-friendly. If you are located near:
• amenities, trails, bus stops, or the Downtown Indoor Walkway System, let your customers and/or employees know by posting a map with your location marked.
• the Riverwalk, let folks know they can arrive by walking, cycling, skiing or skating!
• a Downtown Spirit Free Shuttle bus route, offer Spirit bus brochures and encourage staff and customers to use Spirit buses to go to meetings, restaurants and shops– it’s FREE.
• a well-serviced bus stop, post the Telebus phone number (287-RIDE) and 5-digit stop number in a visible area. Let staff know about Navigo--Winnipeg Transit’s online trip planner--and how easy it is to use.
Encourage cycling among your co-workers or staff:
- bike safety workshops for your employees
- post a Winnipeg Cycling Map (available at bike shops for $2) in your office
- create or lobby for secure, indoor bike parking or install a cage
- employers can allow a relaxed dress code or flexible hours to help employees fit cycling into their schedule and lifestyle and include a shower and change room in building renovation plans
