DOWNTOWN PARKING METERS
Similar to meters in off-street lots, with the new parking paystations on downtown streets, parkers use a coin or credit card to purchase a receipt, and display the receipt on the dash of their vehicle.

How do they work?
What methods can I pay with?
The new machines accept all denominations of coins, as well as Visa,
Mastercard and American Express.

Will these new machines cost the taxpayers?
No. One paystation replaces 8 individual meters and costs the same
as replacing 8 meters. The project is funded by the Parking Authority.

Does this mean I have to pay 24/7?
The times of free parking will not be changing. In fact, the pay
stations will not allow you to pay during free parking times.

What do you mean there will be less parking tickets?

Pay stations are a great way to avoid tickets or towing, because the
machines do not accept payment during rush hour times.

If I see an old parking meter and a new pay station, which do I pay?
Either. The Parking Authority is accepting either the paid meter or the
pay station receipt as proof of purchase during the transition.

Will meter times be lengthened?

Although there is no present intent to change the rates and times, we
will be able to accommodate that more efficiently.

I’m not good with machines. What if I still don’t understand these
new pay stations?

Don’t worry. Reps from the Parking Authority, the Downtown Winnipeg
BIZ and Exchange BIZ will be on hand to assist parkers in most areas.

Won’t these pay stations use more of downtown’s electricity?
Actually, they operate on a self-charging solar battery. Take a look at
the top of the machine!

Can these pay stations handle Winnipeg’s unpredictable weather?
You better believe it! The pay stations were tested for extreme cold at
the University of Winnipeg. They’ve been working successfully year
round at select locations in Winnipeg for the last two years.
