They also leave behind a little gift such as a neon broom or a flower pot to remind businesses of their visit and to encourage businesses to continue to keep their properties clean and take ownership of their neighbourhood. At the end of the summer, the Promotions crew awards the Order of the Neon Broom to three businesses that have made an extra effort to maintain their properties. Program Goal The goal of the Neon Broom program is to encourage businesses to keep their storefronts not only clean, but to also make improvements so it looks more attractive. With a little bit of elbow grease, business people can help the BIZ keep downtown clean and green. Order of the Neon Broom: Crowning the Winners At the end of August, the Clean Team selects three businesses who kept their storefronts looking the best all summer long, and they will be awarded the Order of the Neon Broom as well as a cash prize to put towards facade improvements, which could include anything from benches and planters to murals or lighting. In 2007, Guppy Design, a graphic design firm on Graham Avenue, placed first as the cleanest downtown business in last year’s competition and put their $500 prize money toward a gigantic “G” to represent their name and create a distinct signature look for their storefront. Second place last year was Cassiopeia’s Bridal and third place was The Fyxx on Portage. Complementary BIZ Services The BIZ also offers downtown businesses with free pressure washing during the summer. BIZ crews spray down awnings, building facades, doors and windows in minutes, and it’s free! Downtown businesses can call the BIZ to book an appointment at 958-4640. The program is part of the BIZ’s overall efforts to clean downtown, which sees the 17 members of the Downtown Clean Team picking up litter, removing graffiti, removing posters and sweeping the sidewalks. |
