Portage Avenue Lighting Strategy
Downtown Winnipeg BIZ launched a request for proposals to conceptualize the aesthetic and technique of a Lighting Master Plan for Portage Avenue. Gilles Arpin, of Eclairage Public, agreed with the scope of work overview presented in the request of proposal.
One strategy is urban design, and a lighting plan for Portage Avenue is considered a key element. We expect the lighting design will create a gathering place for the eclectic mix of use, activities and places to form an identifiable environment to Portage Avenue in a comfortable, safe and secure ambience.

Downtown Banners
A few years ago, the Downtown BIZ worked on establishing "Restaurant Row", which runs along St. Mary Avenue, as an essential dining quarter. Banners have been raised to designate the area, and a map of all downtown dining options was developed to reinforce the identity.
This summer, the Downtown BIZ is working with Entreprises Riel to line Winnipeg's new Provencher Paired Bridges with lively banners that welcome visitors to both Downtown and St. Boniface.
The Downtown BIZ works to ensure street banners are in place year round, lining major thoroughfares and character areas throughout downtown. The Downtown BIZ has displayed banners since 1991 for events like Young Artists on the Avenue and programs like Easy Streets. We have had several banner design contests, awarding the winner with an honourarium.

Chinatown Banners
In January, the Downtown BIZ teamed up with the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural Centre to celebrate the Chinese New Year through street banners.
The Chinatown banners this year portray the Year of the Rooster. You can spot the banners every new year as of February on a number of poles in the six square blocks bound by Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue.

Hanging Flower Baskets along Portage
This summer, 80 jumbo hanging flower baskets were raised along Portage Avenue. Secured to ornamental light poles, these baskets, weighing over 200 pounds and measuring three feet in diameter, are among the largest baskets in North America. A two-person maintenance crew is dedicated, eight hours a day, six days a week to keeping these flowers watered. The recent purchase of a new pump and golf cart make this job easier. Downtown businesses embraced this initiative, sponsoring 21 flower baskets and allowing the Downtown BIZ to add more baskets than originally planned. These bountiful flower baskets will become an annual treat for the eyes, adding to the fun and vibrancy of Portage Avenue.
