Downtown Parking Promotion A Success

DOWNTOWN PARKERS SAVED BY BLUE LOONIES AND AVOID PARKING TICKETS

A three-month long Downtown BIZ parking promotion had Downtown Watch ambassadors plugging some expired downtown meters with Easy Streets™ Blue Loonies, saving motorists from a potential ticket.

With support from the City of Winnipeg Parking Authority, downtown ambassadors, dressed in red and black, plugged 2,500 expired meters between October and Christmas. Motorists knew they had been “Saved by a Blue Loonie” by the red brochure left behind, wishing motorists to “Have a Cherry Day,” with a token to remember their downtown experience by: a blue loonie air freshener smelling of cherries.

Figure out the wild world of parking, with a map showing the numerous downtown parking options, plus tips on how to find the best spot and parking on a budget. The brochure also lists the rules of the road straight from the parking patrollers themselves, as well as “busted” parking myths and a map of the Downtown Spirit to refer to once you've parked.

The parking promotion was supported by the Winnipeg Parking Authority, Urban Autopark and Imperial Parking. It was designed by Guppy Design.

This pilot project is part of the BIZ's long-running Easy Streets Blue Loonie Program, which provides merchants with a way to make parking easier for their customers. Anyone who spends $20 or more (before tax and tip) at participating businesses can ask for a blue loonie, which can then be used for $1 off street meters and most downtown lots, as well as for full bus fare. Participating businesses are also listed in the brochure.
