FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEARLY $120K IN GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR DOWNTOWN EVENTS
Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ is encouraging event planners to host their events downtown through grants available from the Host It Downtown program. This program reduces inherent and perceived risks by providing incentives to host new events, as well as relocate existing events, downtown in order to encourage activity in the city centre year-round.
The grant requires that events take place outdoors, and preference is given to events held in the winter and/or during evenings or weekends. The application deadline for Host It Downtown funding is May 21, 2018.
Events can be recurring, one-time, relocated or completely original, and must be sustainable with minimal environmental impact. The events can be fun or serious, educational or simply entertaining, and can run for a few hours or for several days. They can feature local talent or imported artists, and can celebrate a single culture or rejoice in our city’s remarkable diversity.
NEW THIS YEAR: This year separate Host It Downtown funding has been allocated to Placemaking Pop-ups.These events focus on programming at two specific downtown locations throughout the summer months – Kennedy Street at Graham Avenue, and Hargrave Street at Portage Avenue. Applications for Placemaking Pop-ups are accepted immediately and continuously until all funding is assigned or until the end of summer – whichever comes first.
In 2017, the Host It Downtown Committee approved over $90,000 in funding for new or relocated festivals, parades, concerts and showcases. These included Interstellar Rodeo, the Winnipeg BBQ and Blues Festival, and the rapidly growing Nuit Blanche Winnipeg.
“Host It Downtown launched in 2015 after seeing a need to provide events with access to
funding, partnerships and creative support,” explains Stefano Grande, CEO of Downtown
Winnipeg BIZ, adding “activating downtown is a goal of our 2017-2019 Strategic Plan, and this program continues to provide opportunities for people to experience downtown.”
