YEAR OF THE TIGER BANNER TO GO ON DISPLAY IN CHINATOWN FEBRUARY 9

WINNIPEG—It’s going to be a year of strength and power, according to Chinese beliefs, as the Year of the Tiger rolls in for the Chinese New Year this week. Fifteen banners to celebrate the Year of the Tiger will be raised on street poles in Chinatown on Tuesday, February 9, in the Downtown BIZ’s annual competition.

The winning design by Red River College student Kate Loewen was selected from 63 entries. Kate will receive an $800 honorarium and the banner will be officially unveiled at the Kum Koon Garden banquet on February 9 at about 8:30pm, 257 King Street.

The jury, made up of members from the Chinese and design community, selected the winning banner based on the complementary colours and the strong, lively stance of the tiger, set against an earthy backdrop of plants. The colour red shows good fortune and according to Chinese tradition, the tiger is powerful, confident and a fearless leader.

“This year’s design clearly shows the courageous and proud nature of the tiger,” says Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ Executive Director. “These banners are a great way to showcase our local talent and create interest in this unique district.”

The new banners will join 15 district banners currently on light poles which celebrate the Chinatown area.

The annual contest is hosted by the Downtown BIZ and the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre to celebrate the Chinese New Year in Chinatown. The winning designs are mounted on poles in the six square blocks surrounded by Main Street, Princess Street, Logan Avenue and James Avenue. Visit www.downtownwinnipegbiz.com for more information.
