PARTNERS IN SAFETY HOLD FIRST-EVER DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG SAFETY SUMMIT

Winnipeg, Manitoba – On Monday, May 7, 2018, the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, Exchange District BIZ and West End BIZ are bringing together partners in the first Downtown Winnipeg Safety Summit.

This Downtown Winnipeg Safety Summit is designed to bring together a cross  representation of public, not-for-profit, charitable, Indigenous and private sector people  from key organizations and groups who share our vision. Together we will discuss and  share best practices in creating a safer, more welcoming and more inclusive downtown  through public and private sector collaboration and partnerships.

This Safety Summit will provide constructive recommendations that build on and  support the outstanding work being done by community stakeholders dedicated  to making our city and communities safer places to live. Coming out of the Safety  Summit, the plan is to have identified a series of short term safety projects which can be  implemented immediately towards managing a safer downtown, along with long term  safety strategies and projects.

The thoughts and input received both from the public  feedback and at this event are critical in shaping downtown safety moving forward as the information gathered at the Safety Summit will be presented to the City of Winnipeg for their consideration as they prepare to invest more into safety in the downtown.

Topics at the Summit are focused around:

  • Policing and community foot patrols
  • CCTV cameras and technology
  • Community communication strategies
  • Social intervention, managing the social challenges
  • Crime Prevention Through Environment Design, eg: improved lighting

  • Dora Bastista, Stantec
