The concert series is part of a continued commitment by Portage Place to foster a welcoming and culturally inclusive environment for all patrons that visit the downtown shopping centre. Earlier this year, Portage Place has made strides to incorporate an Indigenous lens into its operations: hiring Bear Paw Security, honouring Joseph Meconse as its official Ogichidaa, and participating in a number of Indigenous initiatives led by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ and its Aboriginal Peoples’ Advisory Committee.

“We are committed to providing a welcoming environment at Portage Place for all nationalities—including our Indigenous community,” says David Stone David Stone, General Manager of Portage Place Shopping Centre. “Portage Place is a truly multi-cultural centre and our goal is to ensure people of all nationalities feel welcome. The Indigenous Concerts Series is a fun, engaging, and dynamic way to involve our Indigenous community and share their talents with all downtowners.”

Downtown Winnipeg BIZ Aboriginal Peoples’ Advisory Committee

Earlier this year, the Aboriginal Peoples’ Advisory Committee launched a series of initiatives focused on celebrating Indigenous culture throughout downtown. Initiatives have included the launch of a first-ever Indigenous Artwalk, a second annual Indigenous Garden at Air Canada Park, and an Indigenous Languages Decal Initiative aimed at welcoming Indigenous languages at downtown businesses.
